HOW IS THE UNITED KINGDOM ORGANISED TO GET ENGAGED IN IPBES
The UK government pledged £2 million, from the UK Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Department for International Development, from 2011-2015 to help support IPBES, with Defra making further pledges to support the 2016-2017 work programme. Defra also support Sir Bob Watson in his position as IPBES Chair.
Defra holds the National Focal Point and works in partnership with the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) to shape the work of IPBES and support UK experts in their contributions to IPBES. JNCC supports Defra in achieving a pragmatic evidence-based approach to IPBES and its work by building on existing initiatives and facilitating efficient engagement with the UK biodiversity science and policy communities. JNCC delivers the UK IPBES Stakeholder Engagement Hub, a network of UK and global experts engaged in the IPBES process.

Defra currently endorses all UK nominations.
CONTRIBUTION TO THE IPBES WORK PROGRAMME
Defra and JNCC represent the UK’s interests at the annual IPBES plenary as well as at the extensive programme of stakeholder meetings and workshops supported by experts in the biodiversity and ecosystem service field. Both organisations contribute to expert reviews of assessments through coordinating responses from in-house experts as well as communicating calls and outputs to a network of experts in other government departments, academia and other sectors via the UK IPBES Stakeholder Hub.
TYPE OF ENGAGEMENT WITH STAKEHOLDERS
JNCC brings together UK and European experts on globally important work on biodiversity and ecosystem services to deliver the UK IPBES Stakeholder Engagement Hub. The Hub’s activities include ad hoc meetings and workshops for UK stakeholders and experts; providing information on the structure and processes of IPBES and opportunities to share and learn from past experiences with IPBES. In addition, the Stakeholder Hub communicates updates, opportunities to engage and release of outputs from IPBES and other associated opportunities to the UK stakeholder network via email and through related learned societies, project websites and news bulletins.
