HOW IS SLOVAKIA ORGANISED TO GET ENGAGED IN IPBES

In 2016, we established a national platform for IPBES, but unfortunately, it is not very active. Within next months, we will decide how to improve its work or how to combine it with, for example, the platform for biodiversity that is established for the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity and which is more active than the IPBES platform.  Alternatively, the IPBES platform could become a sub-group under the WG for biodiversity.

NOMINATION PROCESS

For the national IPBES platform, we gather experts that are active mainly in research (research institutions, academy, universities, etc.) But, as mentioned above, the platform has not been very active up to now, and we will decide how to improve its work.

For the nomination of experts for the IPBES official activities, we usually nominate the best experts in the expected fields of work. Unfortunately, until now, nobody from Slovakia was selected to contribute to the IPBES’s work.

CONTRIBUTION TO THE IPBES WORK PROGRAMME

For the IPBES implementation in Slovakia, we support these activities:

  1. Attendance at the IPBES official meetings
  2. Translation of policy-makers’ summaries into the Slovak language + publish them on the webpage of the MoE SR, together with the link to the full English versions of the assessments.
  3. Follow-up of the assessments results: based on the assessment on pollinators, we improved the work on pollinators in Slovakia. We will continue also in other fields linked to other assessments.

TYPE OF ENGAGEMENT WITH STAKEHOLDERS

The MoE SR, together with the SNC SR, try to coordinate at least on the basic work for the IPBES; in the future we will decide more in details which kind of work we will do and how to improve the work with the IPBES in Slovakia.
